Author Maya Angelou was invited to read a poem at the inauguration of President William J. Clinton in January 1993. Soon after that John Biggers was asked to create a special edition folio of lithographs to accompany Angelou’s poem, Our Grandmothers (1993). That commission offered an opportunity for Biggers to give form and synthesis to his desire to honor the grandmother, as the Great Mother, the spirit of “maame” . Said Biggers, “The enduring permanence of the Grandmother is a metaphor for immortality.” (REF: A Life on Paper, The Drawings and Lithographs of John Thomas Biggers, Olive Theisen, 2006; p. 117)
